I remember Jesus once said, "I am the gate. No one comes in or out except by me." In Bible times, shepherds were the blue-collar workers, given the unpleasant task of guarding herds of mindless sheep through all types of weather. When a shepherd would bring his flock to a new area, shelter or fencing was not always available, so the shepherd would make a horseshoe U-shape of briars, ticks or vines, and then herd his flock into the enclosure. A shepherd's only concern was the safety and preservation of his sheep, so there was rarely a need for him to leave, so there was rarely a need to construct a gate. Instead, the shepherd would sleep across the opening and use his body as a gate. Even when the shepherd would sleep, no sheep could exit, and no predators could get in, without the shepherd's action.
In the same way, Jesus protects us from predators by becoming our gate.
